Packaging as an economic calculation
The packaging decision looks like a purchasing decision but is really a balance between two costs: the cost of the materials and the cost of damage. Cutting the first too far raises the second, usually by more than was saved.
A shipment arriving damaged costs more than the product itself: replacement, freight paid twice, administrative time handling the complaint, and the effect on a customer who received damaged goods.
So we approach packaging requests by asking about conditions: what does the product weigh and what shape is it? How many times is it handled before it arrives? Is it stacked in storage? For how long and in what conditions? Those answers determine the specification more than the budget does.
Cartons and packing materials
Cartons across sizes and constructions — single, double or triple wall — differing in compression strength and stacking resistance. A carton suited to a light product will not serve a heavy one stored stacked, even at identical dimensions.
Size itself is an economic decision: an oversized carton means void space needing void fill and a larger shipping volume. An undersized one means difficult packing and pressure on the product. The right size saves on both fill and freight.
Tapes and films
Adhesive tapes across types and widths, plus marking and warning tapes. Tape quality shows itself under heat and humidity: an unsuitable tape loses adhesion in a hot warehouse and cartons open by themselves.
Stretch film for securing loads to pallets, in gauges matched to load weight and nature. Insufficient wrapping means a load that collapses during handling; excessive wrapping means wasted consumption — and the difference is determined by gauge and wrap count, not quantity alone.
Protective packaging
Bubble wrap, foam, paper void fill, edge protectors and dividers. Material selection follows the damage you expect: impact needs an absorbing material, vibration needs separation between items, abrasion needs a soft surface layer.
For moisture-sensitive products, barrier materials or desiccant sachets are added. For heavy products, edge protection and pallet securing matter more than the void fill itself.
Marking and labelling
Labels, print ribbons, marking tools and identification plates. This is an operational item more than a packaging one: an incorrectly marked shipment loses time at goods-in and sorting, and may be stored in the wrong location and become hard to find.
Label selection accounts for the surface it adheres to and the storage conditions, because a label that falls off in a humid warehouse defeats its purpose entirely. Whatever is agreed is documented in writing before work begins, so no term rests on a verbal understanding.
Testing before committing
The best way to select a packaging specification is not a theoretical calculation but a practical test on a small quantity. A sample of the proposed carton, packed and actually shipped and then inspected on arrival, answers the question more accurately than any specification on paper.
This matters most when changing an existing specification to save money. The difference between double and triple wall may look justified on the numbers, but a test across the real shipping route — with its handling, stacking and conditions — is what settles whether the saving is genuine or merely deferred.

Compatibility with the packing line
Where packing is done by machine — a taping head, a wrapper, or an automated line — the specification has to suit the equipment, not just the product. Tape at the wrong width or film outside the machine's gauge range stops the line rather than serving it.
So we ask what equipment is in use before pricing the consumables that feed it, and state the required specification in the quotation including width, gauge and core diameter wherever those affect compatibility.
